Man tries to stab policeman, believed to be depressed

KAJANG: A 54-year-old man who allegedly attacked a policeman at the Batu 9 Police Station compound on Saturday is believed to have been experiencing depression linked to family problems.

Kajang district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, said the suspect attempted to stab the policeman during the incident at 12.10am.

He said the suspect would be charged at the Kajang magistrate's court this morning under Sections 307 and 353 of the Penal Code.

"The suspect entered the police station compound as if he wanted to lodge a report before suddenly taking a knife from a storage box on his motorcycle and thrusting it towards the right side of the policeman's abdomen.

"However, the policeman managed to evade the attack, but the knife struck his belt.

"The suspect was detained after a struggle, which also left another policeman who came to assist injured on both palms," he said in a statement late last night.

Earlier, media reported that a policeman narrowly escaped being stabbed by a man while opening the gate at the Batu 9 Police Station here.

In the incident at 12.10am, the policeman, who was on duty, was approached by a man riding a motorcycle who wanted to enter the station compound.

A source was reported as saying that the policeman opened the gate before approaching the man to ask about the purpose of his visit.
