Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ to get a 30th anniversary concert tour
A concert tour of Baz Luhrmann’s classic, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, has been announced to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary.
Released in 1996, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is a stylised adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tale of tragic love. What distinguished it from other versions was its contemporary setting, moving the action from Verona to Verona Beach, California, characters using guns instead of swords, and the film having a modern soundtrack that included The Cardigans, Garbage, and Radiohead.
The movie proved a box office hit, becoming the breakthrough roles for lead actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, as well as establishing Luhrmann as a director with a unique visual style. Now, to celebrate three decades since its release, a live tour has been announced for October next year.
Titled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film In Concert, audiences will watch the film with original dialogue and action in tact, with a live ensemble performing the score and music from the film in sync with the film. The tour’s press release promises a blend of “rock and orchestral musicians with vocals, electronics, and a DJ,” with the aim of capturing “Luhrmann’s signature fusion of classic storytelling and contemporary sound.”

In a statement, the director himself said: “One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again. That’s the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema. This concert celebrates both, while inviting audiences around the world to experience the film’s emotion, music, and theatricality in a completely new way.”
