Indonesia prepares to expand ethanol-blended fuel to E50

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is preparing gasoline blended with up to 50 percent ethanol, known as E50, as part of efforts to strengthen national energy security, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said.

Speaking in Jakarta on Tuesday, he said President Prabowo Subianto had asked about readiness to introduce E20, a 20 percent ethanol blend, and eventually E50.

"The president asked whether we were ready to implement E20 to strengthen energy security. We have prepared a strategic plan with the agriculture minister," Bahlil added.

The policy will require cooperation between the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the Agriculture Ministry, particularly to secure feedstock supplies, Bahlil said.

Therefore, coordination between the two ministries was essential to developing the ethanol-blended fuel, he said.

"The upstream effort will be a collaboration between Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry," he said.

The government will maintain its B50 biodiesel policy, Bahlil said, citing global geopolitical uncertainty that could affect the energy sector.

"We will maintain B50 because we do not know where geopolitical developments will lead," Bahlil said.

The government also plans to build crude oil storage facilities in several parts of Sumatra, aiming to expand national oil reserves to 60 days' supply.

"We will build storage facilities in several parts of Sumatra so imported crude can be stored for more than 20 days. Our target is 60 days," Bahlil said.
