Stephen Thompson has been one of the most distinctive fighters in UFC history, a karate-based welterweight who made head kicks and spinning techniques look like the most logical approach to mixed martial arts. He challenged for the title twice, spent years inside the top five at 170 pounds, and built a following on pure technique. On November 14 at Madison Square Garden, he will fight for the last time. UFC 334 will feature Thompson against Charles Radtke in what both sides have confirmed as his retirement bout, the final fight on his UFC contract and the end of a career that spanned more than a decade.
Why He Is Walking Away Now
Thompson is 43 and on a three-fight losing streak, but he has been clear that neither of those facts is driving the decision. He told Full Mount MMA the reason is simpler: his newborn daughter. “When you have a little one that comes in, it's such a big responsibility,” he said, adding that the demands of UFC competition pull fighters away from family in ways that become harder to justify. He has watched other fighters try to balance both and struggle with it. He is not willing to find out firsthand. His father, Ray Thompson, has been his coach throughout his career, and Thompson said the decision ultimately comes down to when his father tells him he is done.
Why He Chose Radtke
The choice of opponent was not random. Radtke is 5-2 in the UFC and unranked, the kind of opponent that could use a high-profile sendoff fight on a major card to build momentum. Thompson said that is exactly the point. His own path to the top five ran through veterans who were willing to test him when he was coming up, and he wants to pay that forward. “Why not go out with a chance to give these other guys an opportunity to work their way up?” he said. “If it wasn't for the guys giving me the shot.” For Radtke, whose UFC losses came against Mike Malott and Carlos Prates, a main card appearance at MSG against Wonderboy is a significant platform. Thompson carries a 17-9-1 record, two title fight appearances, and one of the most recognizable fighting styles of his generation into the final fight of his career.
