Rashee Rice missed another practice Thursday, and the Chiefs are running out of preparation time before Seattle arrives. Hamstring and knee injuries kept the receiver off the field for a second consecutive day. Travis Kelce remained limited with an ankle injury.
Kansas City has kept winning through the absences. Sunday's 22–6 victory over the Chargers moved the Chiefs to 5–0, with Xavier Worthy catching every pass thrown his way. But another week without Rice would mean asking the younger receivers to shoulder more of the passing game again.
Rice's Absence Keeps Worthy In Focus
Worthy finished with seven catches for 72 yards against Los Angeles. The Chiefs got him involved early and kept finding him underneath, where motion and crossing routes helped put his speed to use.
That was the largest contribution from the wideouts, though hardly the only one. Rookie Cyrus Allen caught two passes for 27 yards. Jalen Royals added two for 24, while Andrew Armstrong's NFL regular-season debut included his first catch, a 13-yard gain.
For Armstrong, getting on the field was a breakthrough in itself. Kansas City is his third team since he entered the league as an undrafted free agent last year.
Rice has 13 receptions for 190 yards across four appearances this season. Those numbers leave room for a much bigger contribution, provided he can get healthy. Through Thursday, he had yet to take a practice rep this week.
Allen, meanwhile, completed a full session despite appearing on the report with a knee injury.
Kelce's Ankle Adds To Kansas City's Concerns
Kelce's participation did not change from Wednesday. The Chiefs listed him as limited again, with no final game designation attached to Thursday's report.
Patrick Mahomes practiced fully despite a knee issue, as did guard Trey Smith, who is dealing with a hip injury. At tackle, Kansas City has more immediate problems.
Jaylon Moore remained out with a concussion. Josh Simmons is headed to injured reserve after his rehabilitation from a back injury stalled, extending an absence that already covers the Chiefs' first five games.
“He's just not there yet,” trainer Rick Burkholder said of Simmons' readiness for competition.
Undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson has been starting at left tackle. Simmons must miss at least four more games following the move to injured reserve.
Friday brings the final practice report before Sunday. Rice needs to get back on the field; Kelce's workload bears watching, too.
