After Google renames 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' in the US; CEO Sundar Pichai says no to US government's request on changing name of Atlantic Ocean; tells: No, no, no, this time I'm not doing it as …

Trump said he called Google to rename 'Pacific Ocean' to 'Trump Ocean'

President Trump, who floated the idea of renaming ‘Atlantic Ocean’ to ‘Trump Ocean’ earlier this month, has once again raised the possibility of renaming the ocean. Speaking at an event recently, Trump revealed that he called Google Maps and asked to rename the Atlantic Ocean.

He said that Google CEO Sundar Pichai replied to his proposal saying: “No, no, no. This time I'm not doing it.” According to Trump, Pichai said, “Oceans are different, sir. They cover a lot of countries. Please don't ask us to do that.” This comes months after Google renamed 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' in the US following an executive order signed by Trump.

Trump wants to rename ‘Atlantic Ocean’ to ‘Trump Ocean’

As mentioned above, Trump first discussed renaming the Atlantic Ocean this month.

“We’ve got the gulf. We’ve got a beautiful lake,” Trump said during a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee. “Now, somebody said, you need a river. We need a river. We need an ocean.”He jokingly said that the new name could be in honor of him. “We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that,” Trump said further adding “Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. And we need a great river.”

US previously renamed Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario

Earlier this month, the US administration renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, sparking diplomatic tensions between the US and Mexico.

In August, Trump also renamed Lake Ontario, between New York and Canada, as “Lake America”.After an executive order, Google posted a brief update on its Google Maps blog, noting that it follows the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) for its maps. This primarily means that the company has to rename Lake Ontario in Google Maps. Google's update on the name change also made it clear that the change will be only for Google Map users in the US.

According to Google, those in the US will only see the new name, which is 'Lake of America'.

Meanwhile, Canadians will continue to see the 'Lake Ontario' label. In the rest of the world, Lake Ontario will take precedence, but Lake America will also be there in parentheses. Apple followed the suit renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America on Maps for US users.
