Will Encanto 2 finally happen?
The potential sequel to 2021's Encanto has earned an official sequel update from a Disney executive, confirming the fate of a follow-up to the beloved animated feature. Encanto earned critical acclaim and commercial success upon its release, both because of its mature approach to generational trauma, and because of its release on Disney+ at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The film's streaming success was bolstered by three Oscar nominations, alongside high merchandise sales and a soundtrack that quickly reached the top of Billboard 200 in the US.
Now, Yvett Merino, a Walt Disney Animation Studios creative executive, has spoken with The Direct about the possibility of Encanto 2. Merino revealed that, as of right now, there are no plans for a sequel. However, she states that she's open to the idea of another movie in the franchise being produced, explaining the importance it holds for her as the first movie she ever produced. While the door is far from closed on the franchise, right now, there are no plans for another installment.
Check out what Merino had to say below:
No, but I’m always here for it. Encanto is the first film that I produced, and it really holds a very special place in my heart, because it’s about a Latino family in the forefront. So anything that has to do with the world of Encanto, I’m in for. What I’m really excited for now is the casita that’s opening up in Florida in the parks. They’re building a whole casita and an attraction there. I’m excited for that. But anything Encanto, I’m there for.
As of writing, the only major project following the end of Encanto has been the development of a new theme park attraction based around the show. The new expansion will arrive at Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, expected to open to the public in 2027. Outside of this, however, there are no additional projects in the works, despite creatives behind the movie having expressed interest in anything from a proper movie sequel to a Disney+ series over the last several years.
Merino doesn't close the door on Encanto 2 all the way, though, and for good reason. As of writing, the first movie holds a Certified Fresh 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a Verified Hot 93% from audience members. This makes Encanto one of Disney's highest-rated animated movies of all time, resonating with a wide array of people because of a mature story that's still watchable for families. This, coupled with its Billboard 200 success, means the possibility of more will always remain.
But, for now, expanding on the world of Encanto isn't Disney's prerogative. The company is gearing up for a number of major animated releases, including Hexed on November 25, 2026, Ice Age: Boiling Point by 20th Century Studios on February 5, 2027, and Frozen 3 on November 24, 2027. Also in the works by Walt Disney Animated Studios are Frozen 4, Moana 3, and Zootopia 3, none of which have release dates as of writing. This large slate leaves little room for a sequel to Encanto right now.
Question 1 of 3
While it seems Encanto 2 isn't in the works as of writing, Merino's hope for the future means there's still a possibility a follow-up film could happen. But, for right now, it seems like the focus is on other projects across Disney's many franchises instead. There's always a chance the company begins working on another movie at some point in the near future, but, for now, it appears more focused on other franchises rather than revisiting the world of Encanto.
