KUCHING, Oct 19 — A total of 680 schools in Sarawak have been classified as unsafe for occupancy, highlighting the scale of infrastructure upgrading needed across the state, said Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister said the schools were categorised under Scale 6 and 7, indicating the need for substantial investment in upgrading and improvement works.

“Under the RM1 billion advance payment allocation, 86 dilapidated school projects have been completed, while the remaining 54 are at various stages of implementation,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.

Meanwhile, under ‘Projek Rakyat’, Sagah noted that six of the 12 identified projects had been completed, while the remaining six were either under implementation or at the pre-construction stage.

Sagah also expressed appreciation to the federal government for allocating RM1.3 billion under Budget 2027 to upgrade 682 dilapidated schools nationwide, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak.

“It is hoped that a substantial portion of this allocation will be channelled towards upgrading school infrastructure and improving facilities in Sarawak,” he added. — The Borneo Post
