Anne Hathaway's new R-rated thriller with a star-studded cast has recently lost hundreds of theaters, but that is not enough to derail its successful run, which continues an excellent box office trend. Hathaway is having an impressive year. While it is true that 2026's theatrical slate has seen quite a few major winners, few actors are having the kinds of success Hathaway has seen thus far.

The actress starred in five movies in 2026, with all of them being released in theaters. While not all of those films were massive hits, Hathaway's balance is still very positive. For instance, the actress played a key role in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with nearly $1.8 billion, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine.

Hathaway finally returned to one of the most iconic movie franchises in the form of The Devil Wears Prada sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which grossed $693.5 million worldwide. Sure, Hathaway's dinosaur movie The End of Oak Street might have only brought in $121.6 million on a reported budget of $85 million, with Mother Mary at a total of just $3 million, but Hathaway's 2026 box office earnings have been stellar as a whole.

That box office run has continued with the release of Verity. The R-rated psychological thriller is an adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel of the same name. While Verity has been removed from 500 theaters, the film continues a successful box office trend that extends beyond just the exciting 2026 that Hathaway is having.

Why Verity Has Been Removed From Hundreds Of Theaters

According to data from The Numbers, Verity ended up getting a bump in terms of how many theaters the R-rated thriller starring Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett was playing in after the movie posted a successful opening weekend. In its domestic opening, Verity brought in a solid $32 million across 3510 theaters. That inspired confidence, with Verity getting another 62 theaters added to its total for a 3572-theater 2nd weekend. However, what transpired was a 62% drop from the thriller's domestic opening weekend, with Verity bringing in $12 million. Likely due to that sharp fall, Verity took a hit.

For the movie's 3rd weekend at the domestic box office, Verity lost 500 theaters, falling from 3572 to 3072 theaters in the United States. Verity's latest domestic weekend came with a 48% drop, with Hathaway's R-rated psychological thriller racking up another $6.2 million in the US. Verity has proved itself a front-loaded movie at the box office. After all, the film already had a pre-established audience made up of those who read the 2018 Colleen Hoover, with many of those rushing to theaters on opening weekend. Verity's low 31% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes also plays against its box office legs.

Verity Is Still A Major Box Office Success & Continues A Colleen Hoover Trend

Despite the fact that Verity has continued to drop at the box office and lost 500 theaters, there is no way that this movie can be called anything but a major hit. According to The Numbers, Verity had a reported budget of $40 million. That means the Hathaway thriller needed to finish its theatrical run between $80 million and $100 million to break even. At the time of writing, Verity stands at a solid $66.1 million domestic tally, and a major $145.3 million worldwide total, comfortably putting it into profitable territory.

Verity is not only another successful movie in Hathaway’s impressive 2026 run, but it continues to prove how Hoover adaptations equal box office gold. So far, besides Verity, there have been movie adaptations of the Hoover novels It Ends with Us, Regretting You, and Reminders of Him. Those movies ended their box office runs with $351.4 million, $90.5 million, and $89.3 million, respectively, all global hits. Even though it has lost 500 theaters as a front-loaded release, Hathaway's Verity continues to prove how Hoover adaptations will seemingly always turn into box office hits.
