Iraola: Isak, Gakpo Won’t Be Available To Face Manchester City

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has addressed the media ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes Premier League clash against leaders Manchester City at Anfield.

The Reds head into the weekend fixture on a strong run, boasting four wins from their last five matches in all competitions, capped off by a gritty 1-0 victory away at Bournemouth prior to the international break. A win this weekend could propel Iraola’s unbeaten side into the Premier League top four.

However, preparations have been overshadowed by a significant double injury blow, with the manager confirming that both Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo are sidelined.

“Yes, Alex Isak and Gakpo won’t play, not ready unfortunately for us. Injuries in the break. You always hope the doctor doesn’t call you, but we have been unlucky. They are not going to be involved.

Providing a timeframe on their recoveries, the Basque boss explained: “Gakpo has an ankle injury, a matter of him dealing with the pain following a bad tackle. He is working, but not for Sunday. Isak has a thigh injury; whenever he feels ready they don’t look like long-term injuries, but they are not ready for Sunday.”

With Lewis Koumas stepping up to provide depth, Iraola also delivered positive news regarding defender Jeremy Jacquet, confirming: “He is fit and ready to go. He will be fine, we need to train today.”

Despite the absence of key attacking personnel, Iraola is relishing the challenge of facing Enzo Maresca’s in-form Manchester City side in front of what promises to be a fiercely charged Anfield crowd.

“It’s an exciting game, at home at Anfield against league leaders. Won all their games. They will go for it, so will we, we have to be ready and help our supporters. I hope we are at the level,” Iraola said.

“I think it is still very early whatever happens on Sunday—just five games—but it is true we like to face teams like City and show our level, definitely. It’s massive for everyone involved, it’s an exciting moment.”
