Authorities detected 53 planned school shootings within a week, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said on Thursday.
“There were 53 planned school shootings in South Cotabato,” Remulla said in an ambush interview.
“Lahat’ yun, napigil namin. Hindi na namin puwede pag-usapan noon kasi very sensitive pa at saka children in conflict with the law. Pero ganyan kaseryoso ‘yung problema ‘to,” he added.
(We stopped all that. We couldn't talk about it at the time because it was very sensitive and there were also children in conflict with the law. But that's how serious this problem is.)
Remulla said authorities also arrested 53 individuals who were allegedly involved in online threats and groomers.
Some of them are undergoing psychiatric counseling, while others are being handled through other procedures, according to the official.
Remulla said that the planned attacks were not centrally coordinated.
In September, a shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato left three students, including the alleged shooter, and eight others injured.
In August, a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University led to the deaths of two students including the alleged shooter and injury to another student.
Meanwhile, in June, a shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City left three students dead and 20 others injured.
