A total of 251 cases of sexual offences involving students from higher education institutions were reported from January to August this year, says deputy women, family and community development minister Lim Hui Ying.

She said these statistics obtained from the police indicate that safety in educational settings requires serious attention and continuous action, Berita Harian reported.

“In addressing this issue, we must know how to protect ourselves and also how to help others,” she was quoted as saying.

She said the ministry’s Skuad Waja Siswa initiative in universities aims to address this issue by roping in volunteers to raise awareness and help tackle violence against women.

Lim said violence against women and sexual harassment are serious issues that cannot be taken lightly. These are not just physical in nature but include threats, insults, emotional manipulation and financial control, she added.

“Everyone must know that there are channels to seek help and advocacy, and I hope that the exposure through this programme can help students understand their rights and know the steps that can be taken if they face sexual harassment.”

As of September, a total of 340,667 volunteers have joined Skuad Waja nationwide. Out of this number, 264,461 are women.
