Street Fighter 2026 Breaks All-Time Box Office Record For Video Game Franchise

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
Street Fighter has knocked out the competition.
2026's Street Fighter, which debuted in theaters on October 16, is the latest live-action film adapting the video game franchise of the same name. The movie, which was directed and co-written by Kitao Sakurai, features a sprawling, star-studded ensemble cast portraying the franchise's colorful characters, including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Orville Peck as Vega, Roman Reigns as Akuma, 50 Cent as Balrog, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Don Lee as Gouken, and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Street Fighter is projected to earn a 3-day gross of $31 million at the domestic box office by the end of its opening weekend, easily hitting No. 1 on the domestic chart. This sees the movie earning the best domestic debut in history for the film franchise, outgrossing the debuts of both previous live-action Street Fighter movies put together. That total is $11.5 million given the raw numbers and $22.8 million when adjusted for inflation, so this record counts in both cases.
Below, see a breakdown of the box office performance of the previous live-action Street Fighter movies:
|
Title |
Domestic Debut |
Domestic B.O. |
Worldwide B.O. |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Street Fighter (1994) |
$6.8 million ($15.3 million adj.) |
$33.4 million ($75.2 million adj.) |
$99.4 million ($223.7 million adj.) |
|
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) |
$4.7 million ($7.5 million adj.) |
$8.7 million ($13.8 million adj.) |
$12.8 million ($20.3 million adj.) |
The original 1994 Street Fighter was a success, grossing almost triple its reported $35 budget with a worldwide haul of $99.4 million. However, its belated follow-up, The Legend of Chun-Li, was an outright flop, grossing just $12.8 million worldwide against an inflated reported budget of $50 million.
It remains to be seen which film's footsteps the new installment will follow. The 2026 movie reportedly cost $82 million, which makes it the most expensive in the franchise both via the raw numbers and when adjusted for inflation, though that places it roughly in line with the previous films (the adjusted budget of the 1994 movie is $78.8 million while Chun-Li's is $79.4 million).
Because blockbuster movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in order to turn a profit in theaters, the estimated break-even point of the 2026 movie could be as high as $205 million. However, if it has the same trajectory as the 1994 film, it could ultimately earn more than $450 million worldwide by the end of its run.

Rearrange the movies into the correct US release order.
Having a similar trajectory is not impossible. Street Fighter reviews have earned the movie a disappointing 41% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is still superior to the 1994 movie's dismal 20%. Additionally, the original movie earned a matching 20% from audience members on the Popcornmeter, while the new installment so far has a vastly superior Popcornmeter score of 79%. Meanwhile, both movies CinemaScores are exactly even at B-.
