Spain’s players union has called for every match this weekend to be called off as a mark of respect for Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who died earlier this week.
De Miguel lost his life after a sickening collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a second division game on Monday.
The men and women players “in every category” contacted by their union believe “unanimously” that this weekend’s matches “should not be played”, the AFE union said.
Tenerife’s fixture at Granada and Andorra’s game against Mallorca have already been put off, as were a number of midweek cup ties.
“The footballers have expressed their deep sorrow for this loss and do not believe that there are the psychological and humane conditions necessary for the competition to be played in normal circumstances,” AFE added.
The union pressed Spain’s football authorities to place people’s interests above sporting and financial considerations.
