One cut changed the mood inside the New York Giants facility. Najee Harris is gone, and Cam Skattebo is still standing, but he knows how thin the line is. After a fumble in overtime and a Week 6 afternoon with no touches against the New Orleans Saints, the young running back spent the week fixing his habits. Head coach John Harbaugh noticed. Now Skattebo gets a fresh start on Sunday against the Houston Texans, with a message he says he understands well. Perform, or someone else takes your place. Here is what he said and why it matters.
Cam Skattebo Says Nobody Is Safe After New York Giants Release Najee Harris
The timing of the move made the message hard to miss. The Giants signed Harris to a one-year, $1.22 million deal in August. They released him on Tuesday, two days after he questioned how the team used its backs. Skattebo spoke to reporters on Friday and did not dodge the subject.
"I mean, nobody's safe, that's as simple as that," Skattebo said. "When we go on the field and we go perform, if we're not performing, we understand there's a possibility of not being here.
"If I don't perform, I know there's a possibility of me not being here. We came in this week, we continue to work, we know where we're at, we know what we have. And if we put that to display, we're gonna be just fine."
Wow: Giants RB Cam Skattebo reveals that he could be cut by the team if he doesn't improve his play. "Nobody's safe...if I don't perform, I know there's a possibility of me not being here." No one is safe in New York https://t.co/t3rALRk2Qx

The backfield now holds Skattebo, Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr. That is a small room, so every carry counts. Skattebo has 81 carries for 294 yards and one touchdown this season. His 3.6 yards per carry is modest, and fumbles have made the picture worse.
John Harbaugh Gives Cam Skattebo A Second Chance Against The Houston Texans
Harbaugh said Skattebo had a good week of practice and should return to the rotation. The running back says the benching taught him something.
"It's been good, you know; I think I got taught a lesson," Skattebo said. "I don't know if that's from them or from myself, but I kind of had to step back and look at it and figure out why I was doing the things I was doing, what was happening. Came to practice, corrected those things, worked on them. Ready to go back out there and play ball."
He also kept expectations simple. "I took care of the ball during practice, and whatever my role is on Sunday is going to be my role and I'm going to give it everything I've got."
The stakes reach beyond one player. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy makes his first start for the Giants less than four weeks after arriving by trade. A young passer leans on a steady ground game to ease his workload. Whether Skattebo can supply that depends on one thing above all else: holding onto the football.
Kickoff against the Texans is set for 1 p.m. ET. Skattebo has found the right words. Sunday will show whether his habits match them.
