Defending champion India faces its first top-15 opponent of the Chess Olympiad 2026 when it takes on Spain in the fourth round in Samarkand on Saturday. India has won all three of its matches so far, beating Thailand 3-1, edging Indonesia 2.5-1.5 and defeating Italy 3-1 in the third round.
Spain, seeded 13th, has also made a perfect start with three wins from three and enters the round with six match points. The Spanish side, featuring David Anton Guijarro, Maksim Chigaev, Jaime Santos Latasa, Alexei Shirov and Daniil Yuffa, will provide a sterner test for an Indian team led by R. Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin and World champion D. Gukesh.
