Hogwarts Legacy was a game that kind of came out of nowhere, as one of the first attempts in video games to tell a new story within the wider Harry Potter universe. It did a very solid job of that as well, bringing a memorable story and impressive gameplay that players seemed to love, even if the open-world didn't quite deliver quite as well as comparable AAAs.
It also did very well commercially for Warner Bros. and Avalanche Studios, and it is one of the most played single-player games on the current generation of hardware. As such, it was no surprise at all that a sequel was quickly thrust into development (rather than any DLC for the original), as those in charge of the franchise seek to capitalize on its burgeoning popularity.
Now, we have just had an update on how things are progressing, and though it doesn't give us too much to break down, it still serves as a positive update for fans who are waiting in the wings.
As first reported by GameRant, Warner Bros. recently publicly posted a letter to their shareholders, in which they updated them on a number of their upcoming projects for the next year or so. As part of that, they released the following portion discussing their gaming division, including a mention for Hogwarts Legacy 2:
"Games remains an important growth lever as we work toward our long-term Studios segment goals. During the second quarter, we released LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – the highest rated LEGO game ever – and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, our second mobile game from the Game of Thrones universe. These releases marked the first launches under our refocused strategy centered around four key $1 billion+ franchises with disciplined investment behind fewer, higher conviction titles. We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy."
That last line is obviously the pertinent bit for fans of the Wizarding World, and it's now really about when the company decides to unveil what they have been working on fully. We know that they want it to release relatively closely to the HBO show, so it could be the goal to line up its arrival with the start of the second season, if that's feasible with their current cycle.
At the same time, those at the top of the tree have already made it clear that the next game is also going to be closely tied to the show from a thematic perspective. That means a jump forward in the timeline, but it's unclear if they will simply make the next game a direct translation of the first Harry Potter book, or if they will make it more tangential.
It would certainly be a risk to stray from the original series, given that the prequel story proved to be so popular with fans, but the next Hogwarts Legacy game will likely prove to be a major commercial success regardless.
