Boris Johnson 'forced to evacuate train' after Russian drone strike near Ukraine-Poland border

Translate

Boris Johnson was reportedly aboard a train that was forced to evacuate after a Russian drone strike near the Ukrainian border near Poland.

The special train was travelling from Kyiv towards Poland in the early hours of Sunday when a drone alert brought the journey to a sudden halt.

Passengers were reportedly woken by conductors and ordered to leave parts of the train as Russian drones struck targets in the border region.

The former prime minister, who had been attending the Yalta European Strategy conference in the Ukrainian capital, was travelling back towards Poland alongside diplomats, senior European officials and security advisers when the train was evacuated, according to German news outlet Der Spiegel.

It is understood everyone escaped unharmed.

Shortly after the train stopped due to the drone alert, the all clear was given. No further drones were detected.

The incident came as Russia launched a drone attack on the Ukrainian-Polish border crossing, with footage circulating online appearing to show trucks on fire.

Ukrainian officials said a gas station near the Yahodyn checkpoint was also hit.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

There is also no indication that the train carrying Mr Johnson was hit.

Among those travelling on the special train was Günter Sautter, foreign and security policy adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Sautter had been in Kyiv with security advisers from Britain, France and Italy for discussions with the Ukrainian government over possible peace negotiations with Russia.

Robin Wagener, a Green Party member of the Bundestag, told the media outlet: "These drone attacks are blind terror against Ukrainian civilians and a dangerous escalation in Putin's war.

He described the drone attacks as a provocation on Ukraine’s supporters.

"Russia is becoming increasingly unscrupulous and is playing with fire right on the border of the European Union and NATO; we must finally put a clear stop to this terror," he added.
