KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has established a special team to review and re-examine corruption allegations amounting to RM350,000 involving one of its senior officers.

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman said the directive to form the special team was issued immediately following recent calls and the resurfacing of the issue online.

“This step is taken to ensure that the MACC’s integrity remains preserved and public confidence in the anti-corruption institution is not compromised,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The MACC said that the issue had previously been investigated in 2018 and the case was closed after no wrongdoing was proven.

“The MACC emphasises that the commission will not compromise in handling any issue that could affect the credibility of this institution. Therefore, the MACC advises all parties not to make any speculations or spread unverified news regarding the issue,” according to the statement.

Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) had earlier urged the MACC and the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) to take immediate action regarding allegations of accepting a bribe of approximately RM350,000 linked to a senior MACC officer.

MCW President Jais Abdul Karim was reported as saying that the allegations, which refer to an incident on November 13, 2017, had gone viral on social media since Friday, though no official clarification confirming its investigation status had been provided. — Bernama
