LATEST on amended October 2026 SASSA Child Support Grants

Nevertheless, on sheer volume alone, October 2026 SASSA Child Support Grants are, in fact, the most important and costly social welfare in the country.

Besides R580 Child Support, there are two more SASSA Children’s Grants set aside for approximately 13 million recipients in total.

OCTOBER 2026 SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANTS

Similarly, while civil society debates the merits of October grant top-ups, we know for sure that R580 Child Support will not increase.

The South African Social Security Agency has not done so for consecutive years and will not do so again in 2026.

Nevertheless, until we receive official notice from agency, October 2026 SASSA Child Support Grants, plus Foster Child and Care Dependency look like so:

• Child Support pays R580, up by R20 from R560 back in April 2026
• Foster Child pays R1 290, up by R40 from R1 250 back in April 2026
• Care Dependency pays R2 400 up by R80 from R2 320 back in April 2026 

INCOME ELIGIBILITY FOR SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANTS

As ever, applicants must keep up to date with any and all income eligibility requirements.

Previously, a single caregiver on Child Support could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify. Now that limit has increased to R5 800.

And for married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month.

This is good news for those earning a bit extra on the side.

Tallied up annually, that equates to R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple).

Note that there is no asset portion to the Child Support means test, like there is with SASSA Older Person Grants.

Better still, the agency says most October 2026 SASSA Child Support Grants can be approved on the same day.

Previously, the waiting period used to be three months.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO A SASSA APPLICATION

As such, here’s what first-time applicants must remember to bring to their October 2026 SASSA Child Support Grants appointment:

• Valid identity documents (IDs) – preferably Smart ID cards with full biometrics – and birth certificates of you, your child and spouse (if married).
• Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of you and your spouse).
• Proof of income (you and your spouse).
• Certified three-month bank statement, not older than three months.
• Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).
• If you don’t produce all the correct documents and copies, you may be sent away and asked to return. And if you are denied a SASSA grant, you have three months to lodge an appeal with the DSD HERE.
