Carrie could be coming back for more.
Developed by Mike Flanagan (Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck), based on Stephen King's 1974 novel, Prime Video's new series stars Summer H. Howell as the titular teenager Carrie White, who, raised in seclusion by her domineering mother (Samantha Sloyan), goes to public high school following her father's death, where she faces a viral bullying scandal and discovers her telekinetic powers.
Now, talking to Variety at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Summer H. Howell said she would "love to go back" for Carrie season 2. She has "heard things," though "nothing is confirmed yet," and she hopes to "hear soon" regarding the official status of season 2.
Asked if there is any chance that Sissy Spacek, Betty Buckley, or John Travolta – who starred in the original 1976 film Carrie – could appear in a potential season 2, Howell replied, "I think that's up to them, really. I feel like that would be really cool, but yeah, I would love it."
Prime Video has not yet officially announced the status of Carrie season 2, though showrunner Mike Flanagan designed the eight-episode first season as a complete and satisfying story, while also leaving the door open for a continuation. Unlike the original Stephen King novel and past adaptations, Carrie survives the prom massacre in the show.
In turn, season 2 could follow Carrie as she escapes the ruins of Chamberlain, Maine, alongside the astral-projecting teen Emaline (Thalia Dudek), while the secret supernatural organization of gifted women led by Adelaide (Kate Siegel) hunts her.
Carrie's cast also includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Amber Midthunder as Ms. Rita Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard in main roles. Michael Trucco, Katee Sackhoff, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley, Heather Graham, Tahmoh Penikett, Naika Toussaint, Ruth Codd, Delainey Hayles, Cassandra Naud, and Gil Bellows appear in recurring roles.
Since its release on October 7, Carrie has seen massive streaming success, currently ranking No. 1 on Prime Video's Top 10 TV shows in the world as of today, October 19, beating out popular shows like Neagley at No. 2 and Reacher at No. 3. Carrie reviews have also been positive, resulting in an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and an 83% audience score.
With Carrie dominating Prime Video's charts and Howell eager to return, season 2 seems like a bloody good idea, even if fans will have to wait for an official announcement.
