Three flee after Myvi crashes into motorcycle, killing Rela member

BENTONG: Three men fled on foot after abandoning their car following a three-vehicle crash that killed a Malaysian Volunteer Corps (Rela) member at Jalan Mempaga-Sertik yesterday.

Fazlizal Abdul Samad, 41, who was riding a Modenas Versys motorcycle, died at the scene following the 7.30am accident.

District police chief superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said police had launched a manhunt for the trio, who ran towards a nearby oil palm plantation after the accident.

He said investigations revealed that the accident involved the suspects' Myvi, which was carrying two passengers, a Honda HR-V and the Modenas motorcycle.

"The Honda and Modenas were travelling from Sertik to Mempaga when the oncoming Myvi is believed to have veered into their lane.

"The Myvi hit the right side of the Honda before crashing into the motorcycle. The impact threw Fazlizal onto the left road shoulder and he died at the scene," he said in a statement today.

Zaiham said the Honda driver escaped unhurt, while the three people travelling in the Myvi abandoned the vehicle and fled towards the nearby oil palm plantation.

"Police are tracking down the three people, and those with information are urged to go to the nearest police station to assist in the investigation," he said.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The offence carries a jail term of between five and 10 years, a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Pahang Rela, in a Facebook post, expressed its condolences to Fazlizal's family.

The Bentong Rela member was reportedly returning home after completing his duties at the Bentong District and Land Office.
