Jakarta prepares for air transport services under Transjakarta

Translate

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo revealed that his administration is exploring plans to extend Transjakarta's services to air transportation to anticipate the Indonesian capital's evolving mobility needs.

"As a greater metropolitan area, Jakarta will inevitably see the need to look into air transportation in the long run, sooner or later," he said after visiting a public service mall in South Jakarta on Friday.

Since its launch in 2004, Transjakarta has become one of Jakarta's primary public transportation networks, operating bus services across the capital and its surrounding metropolitan regions.

Pramono said the administration plans to task city-owned bus operator PT Transportasi Jakarta with making the necessary preparations for future air transportation services in the capital, taking cues from major global cities such as New York.

The governor recently visited New York to attend the U20 Mayoral Plenary and hold a bilateral meeting with Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

"There could be helicopters or other modes of transportation that are currently gaining traction in several major countries ... we need to prepare for this initiative in advance," Pramono said, emphasizing the need to anticipate licensing and regulatory requirements.

Moreover, he confirmed that the administration is moving forward with plans to introduce Transjakarta ferry services connecting mainland Jakarta with Thousand Islands District in the capital's northern waters.

He has also previously floated plans to increase Transjakarta's authorized capital to Rp13.4 trillion (around US$750 million) from Rp5.2 trillion to support service improvements and expansion.

The governor also wants PT Transportasi Jakarta to expand its operational reach beyond the capital, enabling it to pursue transportation projects at the national and international levels.
