Fans are gearing up for Harry Potter's official return in the upcoming HBO series, which will usher in an entirely new era for the Wizarding World. The series will adapt J.K. Rowling's original novels again from the beginning, introducing a new cast as Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the other familiar residents of Hogwarts, and will reportedly remain more faithful to the source material than the original films.

That approach will give HBO considerably more room to explore characters, locations, and storylines that the movies shortened or omitted, while also bringing Harry Potter to an entirely new generation of viewers. The television series is only part of the franchise's next chapter, however. Harry Potter continues to expand far beyond film and television through games, collectibles, and other projects that reinterpret the Wizarding World in new ways.

One highly anticipated upcoming release is taking things in a completely different direction, effectively switching genres and offering fans a unique new way to return to Hogwarts later this year.

Harry Potter Pulls Off Its Biggest Transfiguration Yet

Harry Potter will be making an epic return this year ahead of the official release of the new HBO show this Christmas, as Defenders of Hogwarts is poised to arrive this fall and take the franchise in a completely new direction. As opposed to another live-action adaptation, new novel, or traditional video game, Defenders of Hogwarts transforms the Wizarding World into the tabletop strategy experience that board game fans have been waiting on for years.

Designed by MinaLima alongside industrial designer David Waterman, the board game puts two to five players in the middle of an attack on Hogwarts, with Voldemort's arrival looming and Death Eaters already infiltrating the castle. Players explore the school grounds, improve their spell-casting abilities, and prepare for the coming battle.

Interestingly, if you're more of a Slytherin or interested in delving into the Dark Arts, you aren't necessarily required to defend Hogwarts at all, despite what the game's title might suggest. Players can remain loyal students or align themselves with the Dark Forces and work toward a very different finale than we know from the books/films.

Defenders of Hogwarts is a significant change from the franchise's usual storytelling formula, where rather than simply watching Harry and his friends confront Voldemort, players become active participants who can influence which side ultimately prevails. It effectively turns one of Harry Potter's most familiar conflicts into a replayable tabletop strategy game that puts the fate of the castle in your hands.

Defenders Of Hogwarts Arrives This Fall

Defenders of Hogwarts is currently expected to reach players in October 2026, although its rollout is a little more complicated than a traditional retail launch. The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter between June and July this year, gaining over 10k backers and more than £1.3 million in pledges against an initial £50,000 goal.

For backers who managed to get in early for the game's launch, the base game is scheduled to ship in October 2026. MinaLima is handling some of the higher-end rewards separately, however, with the Collector's Box and associated premium add-ons currently targeting March 2027 because of their longer production requirements. Late pledges have also remained available, although some Kickstarter-exclusive bonuses and original campaign pricing are no longer guaranteed.

The broader retail release is being staggered as well, as MinaLima says the same base game offered through Kickstarter will begin appearing at select House of MinaLima locations in autumn 2026, while wholesale availability for other retailers is planned for sometime in 2027. The recommended UK retail price is £75, with Kickstarter-exclusive upgrades and accessories excluded from that version.

With Defenders of Hogwarts arriving just ahead of HBO's new series, 2026 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for Harry Potter fans, and it's just the start of a completely new era for the franchise.
