Real Madrid Issue injury update on Federico Valverde

Real Madrid have confirmed that Federico Valverde suffered a severe trauma to his left ankle during Sunday’s Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid.

The Uruguayan midfielder was involved in a heavy challenge from Atlético’s Kang-in Lee during the first half of the match. Valverde was able to continue playing and completed the game despite the injury, but subsequent medical tests revealed the extent of the ankle trauma.

In an official medical statement published on Sunday, Real Madrid said:

“Following the tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a severe trauma to his left ankle.”

The club added that Valverde will undergo further tests in the coming hours, meaning his exact recovery timeline has not yet been confirmed.
The injury occurred foa llowing a challenge from Kang-in Lee that was not punished during the match. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho subsequently highlighted the incident when discussing the controversial refereeing decisions in the 2-1 defeat to Atlético.

Real Madrid's own match report also criticised the decision not to sanction the challenge.

How long will Federico Valverde be out for?

There have been reports that Valverde could be sidelined for around two to three weeks, potentially ruling him out of Uruguay's upcoming international fixtures. However, that timeframe has not been confirmed by Real Madrid, with the club still awaiting the results of further examinations.

Valverde's absence would represent another concern for Real Madrid following their 2-1 defeat at the Metropolitano. The midfielder remains an important part of Mourinho's team, making the results of the additional medical tests particularly significant.
