Peter Parker witnesses the birth of a new Marvel hero who overshadows Spider-Man himself with the ability to recover from any wound. The Marvel Universe's street-level corner is inherently grounded in deeply personal human drama, and Spider-Man stories in particular thrive on the chaotic intersection of Peter Parker's civilian struggles and his superhero responsibilities, which in turn opens the door for new characters with relatable motivations. Peter Parker himself is a paragon of heroism for street-level heroes and civilians alike, so it's only natural that New York welcomes more novice superheroes than other cities.

The pages of Spider-Man comics have played host to several grand character debuts. Marvel's most iconic anti-hero The Punisher famously made his very first appearance as a mercenary targeting the web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man #129. Spidey's titles also welcomed the now infamous vampire anti-hero Morbius, the master martial artist White Tiger, and the mercenary squad leader Silver Sable. More notoriously, Spider-Man's comics paved the way for a new generation of arachnid icons led by Miles Morales in Ultimate Fallout #4 and Spider-Gwen in Edge of Spider-Verse #2.

During Spider-Man and the Punisher's new war against Mister Negative and his Inner Demons, the new Avengers refuse Spider-Man's call for help when the Lexicon is stolen by Donnie Yu and then by Frank Castle. Logically, it's up to Spidey to retrieve the book and avoid further damage. What Spider-Man doesn't expect is that, while attempting to recover the Lexicon from the Punisher's bomb-riddled safehouse, Donnie Yu ends up activating every bomb in Frank Castle's hideout, leaving Spider-Man with no chance but to allow Donnie to keep the book and choose a superhero identity of his own: Turncoat.

Donnie Yu is virtually immortal thanks to the enhancements provided by Mister Negative's Inner Demons, meaning he can brush off the otherwise fatal damage caused by the Punisher's booby traps and the ensuing explosion in his safe house. While browsing for possible disguises at the FEAST center, Donnie tries out several standard undercover outfits before settling on a brown trenchcoat with a red hood and a black breathing mask, which inspires him to adopt the moniker Turncoat, leaving his Inner Demon iconography behind.
