Tribeca Queer Romance ‘Ephemera’ Lands Worldwide Sales Deal With Cappu Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Hong Kong’s Cappu Films has taken on worldwide sales for “Ephemera,” Shan Jiang’s queer romance, which had its world premiere in Tribeca’s U.S. narrative competition this year.

Cappu is shopping the film at the Busan International Film Festival‘s Asian Contents & Film Market.

Yvonne Shuyu Zhang and Shu-Yi play two young women whose lives are on the verge of heading in different directions when they meet. Asher is getting ready to move from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Then an invite extended to her dance teacher, Tori, turns into a night of exploring the city and getting to know each other. Closeness builds between them even as the move looms.

“‘Ephemera’ is about a short-lived romance that doesn’t want to end. Having Cappu behind the film means the impermanence we captured has a chance to stick around,” said Jiang.

Jiang wrote and directed the film and produced it alongside Yinx Zhou and Sol Ye. Jane Zheng and Alex Steyermark are executive producers. ArtChais Technology Co., Ltd. brokered the connection between the filmmakers and Cappu.

Janice Woo of Cappu Films said: “Shan captures the excitement and uncertainty of an unexpected connection with warmth and honesty. We look forward to introducing the film to buyers in Busan and helping it find audiences around the world.”

Cappu is in distribution conversations with buyers at the market. Its mandate spans all territories, though the rights on offer in each will be confirmed individually.

Also on the company’s Busan slate are “Fox Hunt,” with Tony Leung Chiu-wai; “Operation Doolittle,” a nine-part miniseries about WWII espionage; Erica Xia-Hou’s “Banr,” which was selected for Slamdance; martial arts title “Lion Fist”; Joy Hopwood’s Australian dramedy “Her Last Laugh”; and “Zombie Plane,” an action comedy featuring Vanilla Ice, Sophie Monk and Chuck Norris.
