Mail and express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations on October 10 will be cancelled at their originating stations in view of anticipated severe traffic congestion in the areas surrounding the stations, according to people familiar with the matter.

“Severe congestion is expected in Delhi, leading to major disruptions due to blocked roads. To avoid passenger inconvenience, the Railways has taken this tough decision,” sources said.

The cancellations will apply to all mail and express trains departing from their originating stations after 2 pm on October 9 and scheduled to arrive at either station between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10.

The move comes ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar against chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, who is accused of vote theft at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is expected to draw a huge turnout.

The people familiar with the matter said the decision comes keeping in mind passengers' ease of movement. A similar situation was recently witnessed at New Delhi railway station, where a train departed with nearly 5,000 passengers left behind on the platforms, reportedly unable to reach it in time due to heavy rush and road blockades linked to protests, they said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has reportedly asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to consider closing entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations from Friday night, October 9, in view of proposed protests at Jantar Mantar and other locations in the New Delhi district on Saturday.

In a letter dated October 8, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Transport Range, said metro train frequency at the identified stations may also be reduced, citing the likelihood of unruly crowd movement towards sensitive locations, HT earlier reported. The restrictions have been proposed from 9 pm on October 9 and may continue through October 10 until the situation normalises.

The letter, addressed to DMRC managing director Vikas Kumar, requested the metro corporation to issue necessary directions to its officers and staff to implement the measures.
