Spoilers ahead for Reacher season 4.After walking through one of Jack Reacher's most challenging and high-stakes missions, Reacher season 4 ends on a satisfying note. Long before the season's credits start rolling, Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob struggle to save the day in the penultimate episode. They figure out that Lila and Amisha Hoth have created a bioweapon using the hidden formula in the picture on the central drive.

However, they struggle to deduce where they will ultimately use the bioweapon before selling it on the Dark Web. Fortunately, for them, John Sampson realizes that they would use it in his fundraiser event because of his shared history with Amisha. He killed Putra during his deployment in Indonesia, and the Hoths were out for revenge against him and the US.

When Reacher fails to arrive at the fundraiser on time, Sampson puts his life on the line by tackling the suicide bomber hired by the Hoths and taking him underwater to prevent the spread of the bioweapon. In Reacher season 4's finale, Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob set out to avenge Sampson's death.

Like every season, Reacher season 4's plot walks through a high-stakes heroes-versus-villains showdown in its final chapter. This time around, though, Alan Ritchson's Jack Reacher almost dies during the final fight as Lila and Amisha end up getting him with their knives multiple times.

It is his unrelenting will, however, that helps him overpower the villains, and he gives Lila a taste of her own medicine by injecting her with the remaining traces of the bioweapon.

The Significance Of Reacher Sharing His Sandwich In Season 4's Ending Explained

Before Reacher season 4 ends its run for good, the Alan Ritchson character finds himself on a subway train again. Still overcoming his guilt for his inability to save Anna, he sees her sitting across him in one of the seats. The scene highlights how Reacher realizes his mistake and still ponders over how things could have ended differently if he had not told Anna he was a cop.

In most previous seasons, Reacher left town with no guilt or regrets after defeating the bad guys. This time around, though, he carries a heavy burden on his shoulder but also a valuable lesson. Owing to this, when he sees another struggling woman on the train in the closing scene, he sits beside her and offers her half of his sandwich. Instead of aggressively trying to help her, he takes a far gentler approach.

With this sequence, Reacher season 4 highlights that no matter how strong and intelligent the titular character may seem, he too makes human mistakes. Even after his mistakes, however, Reacher always finds redemption by following his mother's advice:

"You’re going to do what’s right.”

Why Jacob Spares Amisha In Reacher Season 4's Ending

Like Reacher, Jacob, too, goes through a major rite of passage throughout season 4. When he fails to save his sister and nephew, he feels incompetent as a cop. Similar to Reacher, he even blames himself for Anna's death and wonders why she did not reach out to him for help. His guilt later turns into anger as he takes it upon himself to kill the Hoths.

Tamara even tries to explain to him that seeking revenge will not make him feel any better, but Jacob largely remains blinded by his helplessness and rage. In Reacher season 4's final arc, Jacob even gets the opportunity to brutally kill Amisha. He arrives just in time to save Reacher when Amisha is about to stab Reacher with her knife.

After taking her down with a non-lethal gunshot, Jacob thinks about using her own knife on her to punish her for killing Anna and her son. However, he, too, realizes that it would cost him his own morality. Therefore, he arrests her instead of becoming just like her.

Why Reacher Hands The Drive To Russell In Season 4's Finale

When Snap, Crackle, and Pop (from the "B" team) ask Reacher if he knows about the hard drive's whereabouts, he lies and says, "No." With this, they shake his hand, and thank him for saving the day. Reacher does not tell them about the drive because he realizes they would bury it and ensure that no one gets to know about how the US worked with Putra and helped develop the bioweapon.

As a stoic vigilante, Reacher cares little about bureaucratic norms or courtroom politics. He only prefers clean, unyielding accountability and justice. Owing to this, he hands the drive to Russell because he trusts that, as an independent journalist, he would never sweep the conspiracy under the rug and always strive to expose the truth with no biases.

Russell even proves he can be trusted. To reward him for his integrity as a journalist, Reacher hands him the drive and says, "Get your Pulitzer."

Who Lives & Dies In Reacher Season 4?

Many primary characters end up dead before Reacher season 4 ends. Russell somehow survives after getting shot. In the final moments of season 4's episode 6, even Reacher and Tamara experience a brush with doom, but luck favors them. Unfortunately, characters, like John Sampson, Anna Merrick, and Ben Merrick, do not end up being so fortunate.

Mary Ellen Daniels, an OnlyFans model, becomes another innocent who crosses paths with the Hoths and does not make it out alive. CIA Agent Foster keeps getting brutally overpowered by Reacher throughout the season before he finally gains the upper hand towards the end. To his dismay, before he can kill Reacher, Amisha Hoth slashes his throat from behind.

Speaking of Lila and Amisha Hoth, they turn out to be the toughest villains Reacher has faced so far. Reacher, however, eventually manages to kill Lila while Amisha gets arrested. Before the season ends its run, all deceased heroes are honored. Jacob chooses to put his sister Anna and her son Ben to rest by scattering their ashes on the beach. Meanwhile, Sampson, too, is honored by the State.

Do Tamara & Jacob End Up Together In Reacher Season 4?

After Jacob spreads Anna and Ben's ashes, Tamara holds his hand. This suggests that they are getting closer and will likely get romantically involved. Reacher had previously noticed that Tamara was drawn to Jacob because of how raw and emotionally vulnerable he was as a man.

Since Jacob holds on to these traits instead of giving in to his anger and desire for revenge, Tamara seems to like him even more towards the end.

How Reacher Season 4's Ending Sets Up Season 5

Like all previous seasons, Reacher season 4 does not have an explicit story setup for season 5. It just shows how Jack Reacher leaves town again after bidding farewell to his newfound friends and allies. Since Reacher loves nothing more than the open road, he continues to embrace his life as a self-proclaimed hobo.

Given Reacher season 5 is adapting Lee Child's Make Me, Jack Reacher's next story will unfold in a small town named Mother's Rest. Yet again, he will encounter new allies and enemies and set out to serve justice to wrongdoers. Since the Alan Ritchson character has learned a crucial lesson about being gentle in certain situations, we might even see a more vulnerable side of him in Reacher season 5.
