Andrew Garfield's New Historical Movie Officially Splits Critics & Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes

Andrew Garfield is having a very mixed 2026.

Known widely as one of the many stars to have played Spider-Man on the big screen, the British actor has taken on a number of roles this year. As The Social Network actor has expanded his career over the last couple of years, Garfield's latest movie role has left a mixed response between members of the press and general filmgoers.

The Uprising, which arrived in theaters on Friday, September 11, stars Garfield as Plowman and is currently getting reactions from viewers, as the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes has finally debuted. As of writing, the R-rated historical drama is sitting at 64%.

For comparison, The Uprising's Rotten Tomatoes score from critics is at 51% on the review-aggregation platform, based on 71 submitted reviews, with audience members clearly more in favor of Paul Greengrass' film, which he both wrote and directed. Time will tell, though, how the % on both fronts will look over the coming days, as the ratings are still subject to change, meaning they could either go up or down as more users register.

Briefly marketed as The Uprising: The Rise of Robin Hood, many were surprised when it was revealed that the feature was also partially an origin story of the legendary archer. The cast also stars Jamie Bell as John Ball, Cosmo Jarvis as Wat Tyler, Tom Hollander as Sir Robert Hales, Stephen Dillane as Simon Sudbury, Jonny Lee Miller as William Walworth, Katherine Waterston as Joan of Kent, Woody Norman as Richard II, Stanley Townsend as Robert Bealknap, Simon Kunz as Sir John Newton, Gerald Tyler as Thomas Beauchamp, and Sky Yang as the Scribe.

Its opening weekend at the box office has been a low one for the project, which focuses on the story of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England. It has currently only earned $3.2 million at the domestic box office, and time will tell how much it will have made by the time The Uprising's run is finished.

In ScreenRant's The Uprising movie review, Brandon Zachary handed the historical drama a 9/10. He shared how "Greengrass acquaints himself well with the period setting, a far cry from the grounded stories the director usually helms. His shaky-camera action impulses are reserved for real moments of chaos, underscoring the stakes and tension of the story. He otherwise knows when to pull back for scope, or to move inwards to focus on specific people and their experiences."

Zachary also praised Garfield's performance, saying that "Garfield is the highlight of the cast," while also addressing the work by several cast members, adding how "Jamie Bell, Cosmo Jarvis, and especially Thomasin McKenzie do great work fleshing out the rest of the rebellion as painfully human, morally complicated figures. The royals are just as compelling, especially Katherine Waterston's Joan of Kent amid her efforts to convince her son, Woody Norman's Richard II, to be a just ruler." This becomes 2026's second Robin Hood movie after Hugh Jackman's The Death of Robin Hood earlier this year, although it remains to be seen who will have grossed the most.

The Uprising is now playing in theaters.
