Indonesia hires 13,000 personnel to staff Sekolah Rakyat campuses

Makassar (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Social Affairs Ministry has assembled around 13,000 personnel to support the tuition-free Sekolah Rakyat (People's School) program, which provides education and housing for students, the minister said on Thursday.

"We already have some 13,000 personnel, including teachers, dormitory supervisors, and student caregivers," Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

He said the flagship program will need additional personnel as the government seeks to increase the number of Sekolah Rakyat campuses to 500 by 2029, from the current 182.

Yusuf added that the ministry had deployed its own personnel during the program's initial phase, including staff previously assigned to support the Family Hope Program (PKH), a conditional cash assistance program for poor families.

"However, we are also conducting recruitment. Once the process is complete and the required personnel are in place, those temporarily assigned will be withdrawn," the minister said.

The ministry is also recruiting personnel for supporting positions, including security staff and cooks, to ensure the smooth operation of all Sekolah Rakyat facilities across the country, he said.

President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka introduced Sekolah Rakyat as one of their administration's flagship initiatives, aimed at alleviating poverty by improving human capital through expanded access to education.

Launched in 2025, the boarding school program is intended for children from families in the lowest four socioeconomic deciles recorded in the government's National Single Socioeconomic Data (DTSEN).

The initiative is also linked to other priority schemes of the Prabowo administration, including the Free Nutritious Meals program and the Free Health Checkups program.

Sekolah Rakyat currently serves about 44,000 elementary, junior high and senior high school students. Of the 182 campuses, 100 are permanent sites, while the rest use existing facilities as pilot or temporary schools.
