The South African Weather Service has issued multiple warnings for disruptive rain, severe thunderstorms, and damaging winds across several provinces.

A cut-off low pressure system developing west of the country is expected to affect the Western Cape and Northern Cape from Sunday into Monday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings for disruptive rain, severe thunderstorms, and damaging winds across several provinces.

The public and small stock farmers are advised that intermittent showers and thundershowers accompanied by heavy downpours at times with possible large amounts of small hail and lightning, significant drop in temperatures over the high-lying areas, windy coastal and interior conditions as well as rough seas (reaching 4.0 to 4.5m south of Table Bay) are expected.

Impact-based warnings

The SAWS issued the following impact-based warnings for Monday:

• Yellow Level 4 warning: Disruptive rain leading to flooding of roads and settlements, major disruption of traffic flow expected over eastern Namakwa in the Northern Cape and the Central Karoo District of the Western Cape
• Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with excessive lightning leading to localised injuries to humans and livestock and service disruption due to power disruptions over the Nama Khoi and Kamiesberg municipalities in the Northern Cape, the West Coast, Cape Winelands, Overberg districts, as well as the City of Cape Town in the Western Cape
• Yellow Level 1 warning: Severe thunderstorms resulting in localised damage to settlements and temporary structures, localised disruption to power and communication expected in places over the north-eastern coast and adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape
• Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging winds resulting in damages to informal settlements, power and communication disruption expected over the North West, eastern parts of the Northern Cape, the central and the western parts of the Free State, central and western parts of Limpopo and in places over the northern parts of the Eastern Cape
• Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging winds and waves resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and ports for a short period of time, difficulty in navigation and localised damage to infrastructure and settlements expected between Port Edward and Richards Bay and the adjacent interior
• Yellow Level 1 warning: Damaging winds resulting in localised damage to settlements, localised interruption to power and communications and difficulty in navigation expected in places over extreme north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape coast and adjacent interior

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium, and levels 4 and 8 are low.
