Elon Musk says Boring Company can cut 2.5-hour Texas drive to under 30 minutes

Telsa CEO Elon Musk has revealed that his tunneling venture, The Boring Company is working on a new project to connect Austin and San Antonio. Presently, the 80-mile journey can take up to 2.5 hours due to traffic.

However, Musk claims that the tunnel could cut that down to a consistent under 30 minutes. Elon Musk took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and shared a post claiming that the Boring Company's tunnel could shrink that multi-hour drive down to a consistent under-30-minute trip. If it comes together, the project would rank among the most ambitious infrastructure undertakings Musk's tunneling company has attempted to date — linking two of Texas's fastest-growing cities with a route that bypasses surface traffic entirely.

“Boring Company is working on a simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel between Austin and San Antonio (>200 mph). Due to traffic congestion, that journey can currently take up to 2.5 hours. @BoringCompany can reduce that to a consistent <30 mins,” Musk wrote in a post on X.The announcement comes just weeks after Boring raised $3 billion in new funding, though that capital was earmarked for a different purpose: supporting the company's push to build underground transportation infrastructure across the United Arab Emirates, not the newly floated Texas project.

A company still chasing its big breakthrough

Despite Musk's characteristically bold ambitions for the business, Boring has relatively little to show for it so far. Its only fully operational project remains the Vegas Loop, while a Nashville tunnel broke ground this year and its Dubai Loop isn't slated to begin construction until late 2026.Closer to home, Boring is also digging tunnels in Bastrop, Texas, reportedly to link properties owned by Musk himself, allowing employees of Boring, SpaceX, Tesla, and X to move between them without surfacing — a project people familiar with the plans described to Bloomberg last year.
