Chelsea forward Joao Pedro will be out of action for "a few weeks” after sustaining an injury during training, manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday ahead of the club’s round-of-16 match against Liverpool in the League Cup.

However, Alonso did not clarify the exact time period for Pedro’s return. “Let’s see how many (weeks); we don’t want to predict that. But he will not be ready for the next games,” he said.

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward had scored five goals and registered three assists in seven matches for the Blues before getting injured in training on the eve of the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“He is a key player and we will miss him, but we have to be ready to deal with the injury, be competitive and try to win games with the players we have available, starting tomorrow against Liverpool, a cup game,” said Alonso.

The Spaniard, however, felt that even without Pedro, the side had enough attacking options.

Emmanuel Emegha, the 23-year-old striker who arrived from Strasbourg in the summer, could make his Chelsea debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. The squad also has Estevao and Danny Welbeck.

“He(Emegha) is in the squad,” said Alonso.
