FIFA U-17 W’Cup: Flamingos target Korea scalp, eye last 16

Translate

Nigeria’s Flamingos will seek to overcome North Korea in their final Group B fixture on Friday (today) to secure qualification for the last 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Nigerian side boosted their chances with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico on Tuesday, recovering from their opening defeat to Poland to claim three valuable points.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 25th minute before substitute Precious Oscar sealed the win with a late header from Adegbuyi’s cross.

The result leaves Nigeria facing a decisive encounter against North Korea, who have dominated the group with victories over Puerto Rico and Poland.

North Korea thrashed Puerto Rico 6-0 before recording a commanding 6-1 win against Poland, underlining the challenge awaiting the Nigerian youngsters.

A victory would guarantee the Flamingos a place in the knockout stage, while a draw would also secure a top-two finish regardless of the outcome of the group’s other fixture.

Nigeria could still face uncertainty with a defeat, depending on the final standings and the competition’s best third-placed teams’ calculations.

The Flamingos, bronze medallists at the 2022 edition, will need to maintain the attacking intent and defensive discipline they displayed against Puerto Rico if they are to overcome the Asian side.

Speaking after Nigeria’s victory, football fan Tope Falana expressed confidence in the team while acknowledging the difficulty of the next challenge.

“Their final group game will not be easy, but they can work harder as a team to defeat North Korea and qualify for the knockout stage,” Falana said, according to Keeping Them Honest.

The encounter presents Nigeria with an opportunity to secure their place in the last 16 and keep their campaign alive.
