Sugiono to lead Indonesia's delegation at UN General Assembly 81

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono will lead the Indonesian delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, representing President Prabowo Subianto, who will remain in Indonesia to focus on domestic priorities.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed the assignment, saying that Sugiono would represent the President in a busy schedule of around 22 high-level engagements, bilateral meetings, and multilateral forums, including meetings involving the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and MIKTA.

"The President directed the Foreign Minister to attend the UN General Assembly session next week, as the President will be focusing on domestic matters," Yvonne said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.

Indonesia's key message at this year's UNGA will focus on strengthening national and regional resilience as a foundation for global stability.

"Indonesia's participation in these meetings will also convey messages regarding the strengthening of multilateralism and inclusivity,” the spokesperson added.

The delegation will continue to advocate for global peace, including support for Palestinian independence, while positioning Indonesia as a bridge builder championing the interests of developing countries.

Indonesia will also use the high-level forum to intensify its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term, which includes hosting a diplomatic reception in New York.

The 81st UNGA session opened on September 8 under the presidency of Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who succeeded Germany's Annalena Baerbock.

Held under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers Results for All," the high-level General Debate will take place from September 22 to 26 and conclude on September 28.
