Chelsea player ratings vs Sunderland: 4/10 defender hauled off in crushing loss

Dom Smith was on hand to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…
Mike Penders 6
Didn’t have a huge amount to do except for his brilliant save from Wilson Isidor. But was nowhere near saving from Sunderland’s controversial penalty, sent the wrong way by Le Fee.
Marco Palestra 5
Helpful in attack on the overlap and put in a fine cross that Morgan Rogers wasted. Defensively not as impressive.
Wesley Fofana 4
Did well on a couple of occasions in the first half to put Brian Brobbey off but was also run ragged by him at other moments. Has not been looking particularly solid recently but this defeat was not his fault.
Conceded a controversial penalty which looked like six of one and half a dozen of the other from himself and Brobbey. Taken off at half time.

Pep Chavarria 5
Lively again but couldn’t create anything of use to Chelsea down that left channel.
Jordan Henderson 6
Important in the middle of the park at calming things down as he came back into the team after missing the Manchester United victory with illness.
Romeo Lavia 6
Was impressive once more, producing a couple of nice dribbles like last weekend against United. Is on form at the moment.
Moises Caicedo 6
Slipped into centre-back role after the break when Colwill was taken off but was not as effective as he often is overall. Booked.
Morgan Rogers 5
A quiet afternoon for the England attacker. It just didn’t fall for the 24-year-old. An off-day.
Looked to make things happen but, like his mate Rogers, was pretty ineffectual on a desperately disappointing afternoon for Chelsea.

Pedro Neto 4
Led the line as best he could but just doesn’t have the physical presence of an out-and-out striker and was taken off just after the hour mark.
Subs:
Estevao (Colwill, 46’) 6
Was bright in the second half down the right channel as he went past players but just didn’t have the all-important end product. Committed a few needless fouls when he had the ball and feared losing it.
Danny Welbeck (Neto, 62’) 4
Barely noticeable once he had come on for the final half-four except for a poor headed miss in stoppage time.
Malo Gusto (Palestra, 62’) 5
Had one shot which was close to lobbing Robin Roefs but was otherwise pretty quiet.
