APC wins all local council chairmanship, councillorship seats in Enugu

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the 17 local government chairmanship seats in the Saturday’s council election in Enugu State.

The Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Christian Ngwu, announced the results of the exercise at the commission’s headquarters in Enugu on Sunday.

Mr Ngwu, a professor, also announced that the APC candidates equally won all the 260 councillorship seats in the state.

The new chairpersons-elect

According to the results announced by Mr Ngwu, Ugochukwu Nwanjoku won in Aninri LGA while Uchenna Okolo emerged winner for Awgu LGA and Beloved-Dan Anike clinched victory for Enugu East LGA.

In Enugu North LGA, Ibenaku Onoh was declared winner, Caleb Ani emerged victorious in Enugu South LGA while Vitalis Ngwu cruised to victory in Ezeagu LGA.

Others were Martin Amadieze (Igbo Etiti LGA); Chris Simon (Igbo Eze North LGA); Ferdinand Ukwueze (Igbo Eze South LGA); Brendan Ani (Isi-Uzo), and Mike Ogbuekwe (Nkanu East LGA).

John Ogbodo emerged winner in Nkanu West LGA, Jude Asogwa won in Nsukka LGA while Greg Anyaegbudike picked victory in Oji River LGA and Innocent Ezeoha was declared winner in Udenu LGA.

The streak of victory continued in Udi LGA where Hyginus Agu emerged winner while Chijioke Ezeukwu won in Uzo-Uwani LGA.

12 re-elected, 5 elected for the first time

A PREMIUM TIMES review of the 17 chairpersons-elect shows that 12 of them were re-elected for a second term in office while five others were elected for the first time.

Those re-elected for a second term in office were: Mr Anike (Enugu East LGA), Mr Ukwueze (Igbo Eze South LGA), Mr Nwanjoku (Aninri LGA), Mr Okolo (Awgu LGA), Mr Onoh (Enugu North LGA), Mr Ani (Enugu South LGA) and Mr Ngwu (Ezeagu LGA).

Others included: Mr Ogbodo (Nkanu West LGA), Mr Asogwa (Nsukka LGA), Mr Anyaegbudike (Oji River LGA), Mr Agu (Udi LGA), and Mr Ezeukwu (Uzo-Uwani LGA).

Those elected for the first time were : Mr Amadieze (Igbo-Etiti LGA), Mr Simon (Igbo-Eze North LGA), Mr Ani (Isi-Uzo LGA), Mr Ogbuekwe (Nkanu East LGA), and Mr Ezeoha (Udenu LGA).

Praise of voters, others

Mr Ngwu, while declaring the results, praised the Enugu State people for their participation in the elections.

The ENSIEC chairman stressed that the citizens’ involvement gave meaning to the electoral process.

He also lauded the security agencies, civil society organisations and the media for their contributions to the successful conduct of the exercise. He congratulated the chairpersons-elect and urged them to regard their victories as a call to service and an opportunity to serve the people of their respective local government areas.

He subsequently issued certificates of return to the 17 newly elected council chairpersons.
