India’s performance in 2023 Asian Games

In a few days, a 492-member strong Indian contingent will take to the fields and arenas of their respective disciplines at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The athletes will be hoping to go one better than what their compatriots had achieved in the previous edition in 2023.

In Hangzhou, China, India breached the 100-medal mark for the first time in history and finished fourth in the standings with a total of 106 medals. This haul included 28 gold, 38 silver, and 40 bronze.

Athletics contributed the most to this record-breaking tally with 29 medals, while shooting was the discipline with the most gold medals (7).

There were plenty of moments to remember from the edition, including a golden sweep in archery. In the compound events, Indian archers bagged all five gold on offer.

Meanwhile in table tennis, the women’s doubles pair of Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee clinched bronze — a first for India in this category. They beat China’s Chen Meng and Wang Yidi, who were the then reigning world champions.

There were also a host of multiple medallists, with shooters Esha Singh and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar bagging four medals each across events.

India’s performance at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games was its third-best ever outing at the Asiad, behind its second-place finish in 1951 (New Delhi) and its third-place finish in 1962 (Jakarta).
