Nani says today's films lack emotional intensity

'The Paradise' actor Nani has spoken about the emotional depth he associates with commercial cinema from the 1980s and 1990s. While promoting 'The Paradise' in Mumbai, the Telugu actor said contemporary films often prioritize songs and action over intense emotions.

He cited Shah Rukh Khan's 'Baazigar' as an example of the kind of mainstream cinema he connected with while growing up.

Nani talks about changing commercial cinema

Nani discussed the evolution of Indian commercial films during a media interaction in Mumbai on Tuesday. The actor said movies from his childhood carried a level of emotional intensity that he feels is less visible in current releases.He explained that 'The Paradise', directed by Srikanth Odela, attempts to bring that quality back to the big screen. Nani said commercial movies now often concentrate on action and songs.

He believes this has affected the emotional connection audiences share with the stories.

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Baazigar' cited as example

Nani brought up Shah Rukh Khan's 1993 film 'Baazigar' while explaining his perspective. Directed by Abbas-Mustan, the movie became one of Shah Rukh Khan's early commercial successes.As quoted by Hindustan Times, Nani recalled the intensity he experienced while watching films from that period. He said, “Today, usually in commercial films, emotions and intensity are lacking, because the idea is to include songs and action.

But in our childhood, we've seen high octane drama in commercial films; that essence is missing in today's cinema.”The actor said emotional depth was an important part of the commercial films he watched while growing up. He believes that element needs to return to contemporary mainstream storytelling.

Nani says audiences no longer root for heroes

Nani also discussed how the changing approach to commercial storytelling can affect the audience's response to a protagonist.

He pointed to action sequences involving heroes and villains as an example.“For instance, when the hero is fighting the villain, we don't root for him; we don't feel the anger or depth of it. The Paradise brings back that intensity; we want you to feel the raw emotions,” Nani said.'The Paradise' reunites Nani with Srikanth Odela after their successful 2023 collaboration 'Dasara'. The new Telugu action thriller was released worldwide on September 24, with paid premiere shows beginning on Wednesday evening.
