7 ways agency robs SASSA pensioners of their dignity

Translate

SASSA pensioners are tired of dealing with the systemic inefficiencies of the social-welfare system. And we don’t mean metaphorically tired, either. It’s so bad that many are forced to sleep outside to hold a place in the queue before sunrise.

We’re inundated with complaints from real-life recipients, who are mobilising into ever-strengthening groups. As such, here are seven changes new SASSA minister Dina Pule could action to immediately address the burden facing SASSA pensioners …

1. SASSA PENSIONERS SUFFERING DAILY

Most concerning is how SASSA pensioners are forced to sleep in queues overnight or wait in bad weather. These over 60s who are putting their health and safety at risk. The South African Social Security Agency must at the very least erect basic outdoor infrastructure. We’re referring to cover from rain, chairs and accessible toilets. These are not luxuries, they should be the minimum standard for a queue that regularly holds hundreds of frail, elderly people for hours at a stretch.

2. BIOMETRIC BOLLOCKS

The agency’s much-talked-about biometric verification and eLife certification is meant to catch fraud, not punish honest SASSA pensioners. Reports suggest facial recognition checks alone have generated nearly 7 800 complaints. Every failed face-scan sends a beneficiary straight back into an overcrowded queue. Therefore, SASSA needs a digital verification method that is less susceptible to issues like ageing smartphones and lack of data.

3. EASE THE REVIEW PROCESS

Since the arrival of new SASSA minister, Dina Pule, review processes have ramped up, when they should be easing. In turn, these spark anxiety among beneficiaries, leading to even longer queues. To rectify, SASSA pensioners report they must find additional money for taxi fare, to stand in queues for hours and to try prove continued eligibility.

4. SASSA QUEUE SYNDICATES

Furthermore, SASSA pensioners are now at the behest of syndicates that buy and sell queue positions. The practice exploits vulnerable people and worsens congestion and unease in the queues even more. This preys directly on elderly beneficiaries who cannot stand for hours. SASSA needs real enforcement here, not just warnings.

5. CLEAR REVIEW BACKLOGS

It was reported recently, at the Thokoza SASSA office in Gauteng, that hundreds of beneficiaries queued from the early hours, only to be turned away after the office reached daily capacity. Turning away pensioners who arrived before dawn is unacceptable and then forces the need for a repeat trip.

6. GOLD TO BLACK CARD SWITCH

Monday 31 August 2026 is the final day to replace the old Gold Card with the new Postbank Black Card. The deadline is landing hard on the remaining elderly beneficiaries who have not yet performed the switch. Mobile card-swap units in community halls and clinics would reach SASSA pensioners who cannot easily travel.

7. RAISE SASSA GRANTS IN LINE WITH INFLATION

Finally, and this is the big one – SASSA pensioners deserve inflation-linked grant increases. Western Cape pensioners have petitioned Parliament to review and raise it to R5 000. They argue the current amount does not cover food, rent, electricity and other basics. Until that review happens, the grant keeps shrinking in real-value terms every month.

But what do you think? Did we leave any out? Are there any real-world experiences you can share to improve the plight of SASSA pensioners? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
