SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — Police accounted for 155 firearms during a three-day anti-criminality and law enforcement operation across the Ilocos region from Aug. 17 to 19, including four firearms seized during targeted operations, authorities said.

The Police Regional Office 1 (PRO 1) said in a report on Friday (Aug. 21) that the operation, part of the Simultaneous Anti-Criminality and Law Enforcement Operations, also resulted in the arrest of four people facing firearm-related charges.

Of the 155 firearms accounted for, 118 were voluntarily surrendered by civilians, 32 were deposited for safekeeping, four were confiscated during police operations and one was recovered.

The operation involved five specialized police actions aimed at addressing loose firearms, preventing gun-related violence and improving public safety, PRO 1 said.

Brig. Gen. Jovencio Badua Jr., PRO 1 regional director, said the large number of surrendered firearms reflected cooperation between the police and the community.

“Every firearm we take off the streets or properly secure is a direct step toward a safer community,” Badua said in a statement.

“While we will remain relentless in tracking down illegal weapons, we also want to thank responsible gun owners who chose voluntary compliance. Together, we are keeping weapons out of dangerous hands,” he added. — Kenneth P. Tabin/Contributor /das
