Authorities have rescued a Philippine long-tailed macaque from an animal impound in Muntinlupa City, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) said.
While the animal does not have signs of wounds or bruises, the DENR-NCR said that its body was infested with fleas while under the care of the animal facility.
"Maayos na isinagawa ng DENR MEO-South ang turnover ng nasabing unggoy sa Biodiversity Management Bureau–National Wildlife Research and Rescue Center (BMB-NWRRC) para sa karagdagang assessment, pangangalaga, at pagtukoy sa nararapat na disposisyon nito," the DENR said in a statement on Tuesday.
(The DENR MEO-South smoothly conducted the turnover of the said monkey to the Biodiversity Management Bureau–National Wildlife Research and Rescue Center (BMB-NWRRC) for further assessment, care, and determination of its proper disposition.)
The Philippine long-tailed macaque can be found in various parts of the Philippines and can adapt in any type of habitat, such as forests and mangroves.
The population of macaque is under threat as it is considered endangered by the IUCN Red List.
The DENR-NCR reminds the public that capturing, keeping, transporting, selling, and other uses of wildlife are governed by existing laws and regulations. Under Republic Act 9147 (the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001), proper permits, registrations, or other legal documents are required, depending on the species and the activity involved. — VDV, GMA News
