The Wood Restaurant

Translate

Wood-fired cooking and museum wines in the heart of the Hunter Valley.

Now, here’s a smart template for more winery restaurants. A spacious timber-framed dining room and a deck where you can stretch out. Sparkling stemware. The option for a lunchtime Aperol spritz. Most importantly, though, the menu is packed with simple, rustic things you want to eat with good wine, like hand-rolled gnocchi, merguez sausages, whole fish and hulking steaks.

Chef Sam Alexander (of the sadly missed Yellow Billy on Hermitage Road) joined Brokenwood Wine’s restaurant in 2026 and his immediate order of business was installing two wood-fulled parilla grills. They do the heavy lifting on a lot of dishes, such as Mandalong Valley quail with spot-on juicy texture, teamed with a pulpy fire-roasted tomato sauce.

With so much iconic Brokenwood shiraz on the wine list, a dry-aged dairy cow rib-eye to share is the easy choice (served with an extra herby chimichurri), but roasted Redgate Farm hen and some well-cellared chardonnay sounds like a splendid afternoon, too. The view of the car park isn’t quite as romantic as, say, the rolling hills surrounding Bistro Molines, but if you want to drink some aged Hunter Valley wine at terrific prices, this is the dining room to do it.

Good to know: Allow time to check out Brokenwood’s cellar door and its small winery museum.
