Warning: this article contains spoilers for Chicago Med season 12, episode 2, "Third Rails."Chicago Med returned to NBC for season 12 with a mass-casualty event that needed all hands on deck, leaving little time to address the cliffhanger from the end of season 11. Whether Sharon Goodwin would keep her job at Gaffney wasn't the most pressing question of the premiere, but something had to give in "Third Rails." Sharon had a big decision to make after learning Doris was the one responsible for breaking the law, and the future of original cast member S. Epatha Merkerson was in question.
The ED was in turmoil in "Third Rails," and not just because a trio of subway-surfing teens was brought in with grievous injuries. The doctors leaned on Dr. Tanaka-Reed's help while Lenox remained absent, and Hannah's return from maternity leave involved joining forces with Dr. Abrams. Archer was still at odds with Mallory over budget cuts, and the future of the ED hinged on whether Sharon would be back as hospital administrator or take Miranda's deal to resign. Doris' confession was more of a complication for Goodwin than a relief.
The good news is that this isn't the end of S. Epatha Merkerson's time as Sharon Goodwin, and Dr. Charles won't be the last original cast member standing on Chicago Med. For better or worse, however, the fix isn't going to last forever. The return of a long-absent Chicago Med character is key to what the future holds for Sharon Goodwin.
How Chicago Med Is Keeping S. Epatha Merkerson
Sharon seemed to be out of good options by the beginning of "Third Rails." She had to choose between giving up her fight to keep her job at Gaffney and turning Doris in for leaking the file that saved Dr. Charles' job. Sharon was unwilling to use Doris' confession against her, telling her son that Doris would be fired and unable to find new work. That didn't mean she was willing to abandon the staff to work under Mallory's budget cuts, and the new story is going to be juicy for S. Epatha Merkerson.
She decided to take the deal Miranda had offered in exchange for resigning as administrator, and Miranda may come to regret one technicality: the deal required Sharon to quit, but didn't include a non-compete clause that would force her out of Gaffney. Instead, she's joining the staff of the ED as charge nurse, and her willingness to work for far less than she's worth means Mallory would have every budgetary reason to agree to the change. Sharon is trading in her high heels for sneakers and scrubs, and the preview for the next episode proves she's still ready to fight.
Sharon clearly isn't hiding her motivations in coming back, even when directly confronted by Miranda. It remains to be seen whether Miranda will put any pressure on Mallory to fire Sharon, but Sharon's stellar record as a nurse combined with her willingness to work for les would go a long way while budget cuts are a priority. Sharon still has the respect of the rest of the ED, and the twist could actually result in Merkerson getting more screen time rather than less. If it results in Doris keeping her job as well, Sharon already scored a big win.
When Goodwin Will Be Back In Charge
Viewers shouldn't expect that Sharon's switch to working as a nurse will be a permanent change. In fact, she will almost certainly be back in charge at Gaffney before the end of the year, and it's all thanks to what NBC has already revealed about the final episode of 2026.
Colin Donnell is set to reprise his role as Dr. Connor Rhodes for the first time in seven seasons over the course of two episodes. PEOPLE reports that he'll return in the fall finale after Sharon recruits him to help with a young heart patient in need of a risky surgery. Sharon would hardly be in the position to do this if she's still working as a charge nurse in the ED, and the first look at Donnell's return shows Goodwin wearing her standard suit as administrator rather than scrubs.
The fall finales for One Chicago are usually the eighth or ninth episodes of each season, and Chicago Med's is scheduled for December 9, 2026. Assuming that the franchise takes the week of Thanksgiving off, as usual, then Sharon will be back in her old job by the penultimate episode of the fall, and within the next six episodes.
The schedule for the end of NBC's fall lineup hasn't been released yet, so it's not clear how many (if any) weeks that One Chicago will take off from airing new episodes. The three shows usually either end the fall half of their seasons before Thanksgiving, or skip the week of that holiday. If that's the case, and if NBC doesn't skip any other weeks, then season 12 will wrap the fall season after a total of nine episodes.
Question 1 of 3
For now, Sharon Goodwin is set to get back to her old job as a nurse in the ED. New episodes of Chicago Med will continue airing on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
