As soon as a juicy full toss met the full face of his bat and thudded into the ropes past mid-off, R. Smaran took off his helmet, held his arms aloft and looked towards the heavens in gratitude. The celebration was as classy as the innings that sparked it.

The 23-year-old southpaw from Bengaluru had reached the three-figure mark on six previous occasions in his fledgling First Class career, but this was arguably his finest of the lot. It came under trying circumstances, with Rest of India in strife at 130 for four -- the lead just 89 -- in its second innings against Jammu & Kashmir when he walked in.

Rishabh Pant & Co. then slid further to 197 for eight, seemingly leaving RoI on the brink of defeat on day three of the Irani Cup fixture at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium on Saturday. But Smaran, established already as a prolific run-getter after amassing a chart-topping 950 runs for Karnataka in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, didn’t let the battle become a foregone conclusion.

At the end of another day of bright sunshine here, he changed the complexion of the contest remarkably with an unbeaten 126 (131b, 15x4, 5x6) of sublime quality. National selectors Pragyan Ojha and Shiv Sundar Das, in attendance here, are bound to take note.

Mukesh Choudhary (9 n.o., 47b, 2x4) offered quiet company as Smaran spearheaded an unbroken ninth-wicket partnership of 109 runs off 118 balls to take the visitors to 306 for eight. RoI’s lead now stands at 265 runs.

Such a fightback seemed far off when Choudhary joined Smaran after tea. Yet, the latter kept farming the strike adroitly and batting as if no fielders existed. His only false note came late in the day when he was adjudged leg-before on 104, but Umar Nazir, who had toiled hard for three wickets, had overstepped. It was a dose of fortune that Smaran thoroughly deserved for a first-rate effort.
