Napoli goalscorer Gilmour on Landucci celebration: ‘We worked on it in training’

Billy Gilmour’s first goal of the season gave Napoli the lead at the Franchi, in what would finish a 1-1 draw, and the celebration told its own story: the Scottish midfielder and much of the squad ran to the touchline to embrace Max Allegri’s assistant, Marco Landucci.
The finish itself was excellent, Matteo Politano’s corner from the left, Gilmour arriving unmarked to guide a volley into the bottom corner, but the movement had been rehearsed.
“We worked on it in the training pitch to take chances like this and it worked well, so I went to thank the squad and the backroom team,” Gilmour told DAZN Italia.
Gilmour: ‘We could’ve scored a lot more’
Fiorentina levelled through Alex Jimenez six minutes after the restart, a deflected effort that beat Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, and Napoli could not find a second despite David de Gea keeping the hosts in it with a string of saves from the likes of David Neres and Costantino Favasuli.
“It was an important game, so a point is OK going into the international break, but at points in the game we could’ve scored a lot more,” Gilmour said. “We didn’t get the three points today, but we worked hard and gave it our all.”
It was the midfielder’s first Serie A goal since September 2025 and a welcome moment after a summer he would rather forget. An injury forced him out of Scotland’s World Cup squad, and he was only recalled by Sebastien Pocognoli last week having recovered from the knee problem that also kept him out of Steve Clarke’s final selection.
“Of course it was difficult not to go to the World Cup, but I’ve got good people here who helped me along the way. When you’re training with your club, you work hard and get the benefits from it.”
Napoli stay in the title race but will feel the point was a missed opportunity, having led at a ground where Allegri had lost just once in his previous twelve Serie A visits.
