‘Derry Girls’ Creator Lisa McGee Sets Mockumentary ‘Jig’ at Netflix

Derry Girls and How to Get to Heaven From Belfast creator Lisa McGee is heading back to Netflix for her next series.

The streamer has greenlit Jig, a mockumentary comedy set in the “high-stakes world of competitive Irish dancing.” The six-episode show is set to begin filming next year in Northern Ireland.

Jig is one of a number of announcements Netflix made at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday, including a Top Boy prequel series, Jonny Boy, starring Barry Keoghan; drama The Unheard, starring Kate Winslet and Maxine Peake; and a series based on some of Roald Dahl’s short stories.

Jig will center on best friends Cara and Fletcher, who are part of a struggling dance school in Derry that aims for the world championships in Irish dancing. Standing in their way are “their sworn rivals in Florida, a slick, sponsored, seemingly unbeatable operation,” per the show’s logline. Casting hasn’t been announced yet.

Orchid Pictures (Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials) is producing the series. McGee is writing Jig and will executive produce with Liz Lewin, Caroline Leddy and Suzanne Mackie.

Jig will be McGee’s third series for Netflix, after Derry Girls and How to Get to Heaven From Belfast. She’s also developing a U.S.-set series called Wildwood with FX and 20th Television.

Other Netflix announcements from Edinburgh:

• Clive Owen will star opposite Anya Taylor-Joy in How to Kill Your Family, a revenge thriller based on the best-selling novel by Bella Mackie. Orlando Norman (Silo) and David Shields (Masters of the Air) have also joined the cast. Filming is set to start in the fall.

• Robert Webb, Timothy Spall, Alexandra Roach, Denise Welch and Loo Brealey will star in Marbles, a comedy from Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper. The series follows a couple that is raising three boys while also caring for their aging parents.

• The streamer ordered Beat Luke Littler, a live event that will pit a group of amateur darts players against the world’s top-ranked player. It’s set to premiere Oct. 30.

• YouTubers the Sidemen will produce a competition series called Outside, an outdoor version of their challenge-filled show Inside.
