Tencent Holdings (TCEHY) plans to raise at least $4.5B through a issuance of U.S. dollar and offshore Chinese yuan bonds as the technology conglomerate accelerates investment in artificial intelligence, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter cited by Reuters.
The potential offering follows Tencent’s $4.66B bond issue in June, though final capital targets remain subject to market conditions and investor demand, the source told Reuters.
The proposed transaction consists of senior unsecured notes under Tencent's global medium-term note program, according to a term sheet reviewed by Reuters.
The term sheet indicates Tencent may offer 10-year and 20-year U.S. dollar tranches alongside 10-year and 30-year offshore yuan tranches, as per the reports.
Completion of the issue remains subject to market conditions, corporate funding requirements, and investor interest, with no binding agreement finalized yet, according to a stock exchange filing cited by Reuters.
Tencent's capital expenditure more than doubled year-over-year in the first half of 2026 to 96.3B yuan ($14.4B), up from 45.9B yuan in the prior-year period, according to a stock exchange filing referenced by Reuters.
The allocation funded IT infrastructure improvements, including data centers, software, and computing hardware.
Banks are expected to arrange investor calls later in the day ahead of the potential offering, according to the sheet.
The fundraising occurs alongside massive AI capital deployment across global tech, according to Reuters. SoftBank completed an $11.1B bond sale in September to support OpenAI, while Chinese developer Z.ai raised $5B via equity and convertible bonds, the report noted. However, investors have turned increasingly selective amid elevated interest rates and bond yields, the report added.
