Is Jaxson Dart’s New York Giants Future In Doubt After J.J. McCarthy’s Impressive Win?

Nobody gave the New York Giants much of a chance in Houston. Ten-point underdogs, a new starter, and a loud NRG Stadium crowd made the script look obvious. Then J.J. McCarthy played a clean, mistake-free game. The quarterback threw for 252 yards, kept every pass away from trouble, and helped the Giants outlast the Houston Texans in overtime. Head coach John Harbaugh got his statement win, the team moved to 4-2-1, and a quiet question started to grow in the building. What happens when the backup plan looks like the answer?
How J.J. McCarthy Steadied The New York Giants Against The Houston Texans
J.J. McCarthy did not need flashy plays to win this one. He completed 20 passes, avoided turnovers, and let the offense settle into a rhythm. That patience fits a Harbaugh team, where protecting the football comes first.
His postgame words matched the performance.
“Truly the only stat I care about is going 1-0,” McCarthy told reporters once the game concluded. “I (couldn't) care less how we get it done. At the end of the day, you want to perform well.
“You want to execute well. It's one of those things where if the running backs are getting their touches and getting their touchdowns, I'm as happy as I can be. Whether I'm throwing the touchdowns, I'm as happy as I can be. At the end of the day, all that matters is getting that victory.”
He also made sure the locker room got its share of the credit.
“I just give so much credit to the coaches, Jameis, Jake and Jaxson for helping me out the second I walked in the door,” McCarthy said. “All credit goes to everyone in that building for helping me get prepared for this game.”

The turnaround is sharp. In Week 6, McCarthy came off the bench against the New Orleans Saints with the Giants trailing 34-10. They lost 34-27, but he showed enough to earn the start.
Why The Jaxson Dart Question Is Growing For The New York Giants
Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2, which opened the door. The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings last month, and Jameis Winston lost the starting race.
Now a respected voice sees a looming decision. Bill Simmons of The Ringer shared his view on Sunday night.
“The Giants are going to have a real issue if McCarthy looks like he did today for the rest of the season with the Jaxson Dart piece of this,” Simmons said.
The money side makes it even more interesting. McCarthy carries a cap hit of just $836,108 this year and $3.775 million in 2027. Dart is due $2.3 million next season. Both cost little, so the Giants can afford to wait.
The schedule gives them time to think. After the Week 8 bye, the New York Giants visit the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, November 8. Four days later, they host the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium on Thursday, November 12. Those two NFC East games will show whether McCarthy's calm in Houston was a one-day story or the start of something bigger.
